We’re not really sure what to make of the release of Cuccchi on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC, but we’re pretty certain that if you’re after a dreamlike journey through the wild mind of Enzo Cucchi, this is going to be the game that provides it.
Available to purchase and download right now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC through Steam, Cuccchi (yep, triple-c right there) has been created by Julián Palacios a Milan based developer who previously released Promesa to the world. With help from Fantastico Studio, Cuccchi makes a mark on console and PC, perhaps like no game ever before it, and possibly none after it either, to deliver the live works of a master of the art scene – Enzo Cucchi.
It’s priced at £6.69 from the Xbox Store and will give players the chance to take in 7 different areas which have been inspired by Enzo’s work, with scenes that cover life, motion and some fantastic characters.
It’ll be up to you to work your way through these worlds, searching for objects (51 in total), avoiding all evils and dodging numerous dangers. With a maze-like piece of gameplay present, it’ll be the unlocking of the hidden objects that is your primary goal here, if only as each will unlock a painting from Cucchi’s art past.
With a lo-fi soundtrack pushing you along and the most distinctly visual style that we’ve seen in a while, this is the first artist archive that has made it in the form of a game.
The key features in summary include:
- Cuccchi is the first artist archive created in the form of a video game.
- 7 unique levels, each one inspired by different artworks
- A distinctive visual style that plays with different 3D techniques
- A mix of exploration and maze-like gameplay
- 51 hidden objects to collect and defend from danger
- Each hidden object unlocks a painting in an archive/gallery of Cucchi’s art
- An electronic/lo-fi soundtrack that will appeal to fans of Boards of Canada, Four Tet, múm
Does it work? Well, our full review is in the works and will let you know just that. Keep an eye out for it going live soon.
If you wish to experience Cuccchi for yourself, get over to the Xbox Store. You’ll also find it on the stores of PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC.
